Baseball splits with Big Red

The Big Green baseball team rolled on to their third straight Ivy victory before dropping the second game of a doubleheader to Cornell in Ithaca yesterday.

Dartmouth is currently tied with Harvard for the first seed in the Red Rolfe division with its 3-1 Ivy and 10-9 overall record. With their two victories against top-ranked Princeton and another against Cornell, Dartmouth has a good jumpstart into the season and a nice standing in Ivy competition as they return home for five straight games.

Dartmouth will be facing Siena tomorrow before returning to Ivy play this weekend hosting Penn (2-1 Ivy, 10-8 overall) and Columbia (1-1 Ivy, 4-19 overall) in a series that could confidently propel them into a mid-season Brown match-up.

Yesterday's game saw John Velosky '02 get a complete game victory while only allowing five hits to improve to 3-1. The Green posted three first-inning runs that were matched by Cornell in the bottom frame before Dartmouth added two more in the top of the second. The Big Green would hold on to the 5-3 lead for the next six innings to gain the victory.

6'2" lefty Jeff Dutremble '01, making his second start since recovering from shoulder problems this spring went six strong innings allowing only two runs and four hits while striking out four.

Jon Miller '00 came in to relieve Dutremble allowing one run before mowing down the next three batters with no outs and the bases loaded.

The Dartmouth offense couldn't match the run production of the Princeton series though as they were only able to eek out a single run in the top of the eighth to fall by a final 3-1.

Dartmouth hopes to combine its effective pitching with a dangerous yet unpredictable offense for tomorrow's home opener at Red Rolfe Field; start time is 1 p.m.
