Big Red women's lacrosse opens strong

The true league schedule hasn't begun for most teams, but the Ivy League women's lacrosse season is already heating up. No team has a losing record thus far, and the league appears to be stocked with talent, from top to bottom.

Brown

The Bears have opened the season with a solid 3-1 record. Brown has wins over Boston College, Colgate, and Stanford.

The Colgate win was come from behind with Christi Gigon scoring with 2:09 remaining in overtime. The senior attacker had three goals and two assists on the game.

The Bears lone blemish was a close 11-10 loss against Harvard.

Columbia

The Lions own a 2-2 record thus far. They scored quality wins over Fairfield and Wagner, but fell by large margins to Princeton and Dartmouth.

Cornell

The Big Red compiled the best record out of the Ivy League teams with a 5-0 early season campaign. Cornell, ranked 16th coming into last weekend, had wins over Rutgers, UMass, Stanford, Cal, and Penn. The last three games were won by margins of10 goals or more.

Harvard

The Crimson started out the season on the right track by defeating BC, UMass, and Brown. This is the first time since the 1997 season Harvard has started the season 3-0.

Penn

Four away games for the Quakers have brought mixed results. Penn overcame American and Villanova, but then fell 9-8 to Yale, and 15-5 to Cornell.

Traci Mirabella went into the weekend with six goals and two assists for the Quakers.

Princeton

The Tigers opened their nonleague schedule with some tough matches. Princeton fell to Loyola (Md.) by a score of 6-5 in the first game.

The fourth ranked Tigers then rebounded by defeating Duke 11-10 and Georgetown 8-6. Both teams were ranked in the top ten. Senior goalie Laura Field was named the Ivy defensive player of the week for last week.

Yale

The Bulldogs came out of the gates roaring before running into a tough Dartmouth's squad. The fourteenth-ranked Eli defeated Hofstra, Holy Cross, Penn, and New Hampshire in impressive fashion.

Sophomore midfielder Amanda Walton was named Ivy League player of the week for her 15 point offensive effort in the first weekend of the season.
