Twenty members of the Class of 2000 joined Palaeopitus, a group of seniors who advise the College president and the dean of the College yesterday.
Seventeen of the members of Palaeopitus are chosen each year by the outgoing senior group, according to current co-chair Mia Hockett '99.
Next year's members include Tchintcia Barros, Ben Berk, Sarah Burgamy, Olivia Carpenter, Christen Einsiedler, Mike Evans, Vanessa Ferro, Cara Fuller, Josh Green, Kirk Klausmeyer, Katie McCarthy, Yuhka Miura, Jaimie Paul, Janelle Ruley, James Simermeyer, Brian Sleet and Meghan Sullivan.
The other three of the members are ex-officio positions in the society - Kelly Bodio, next year's intern to the College president, Eric Buchman, senior class president-elect and Jake Elberg, president of The Dartmouth.
The selection process is designed to find members who will bring a variety of experiences and diversity to the group, Hockett said.
The process begins with each current member nominating two to five juniors to be considered for the open positions.
"We had a list of about 50 juniors who were leaders in their respective area of campus," Hockett said.
From there, the current group held a six-hour meeting where the candidates were discussed at length and voted on, then discussed again until a final group was agreed upon.
Hockett said that when choosing candidates, each one is considered not only individually but also in relation to each other so the group has members who are strong in all areas.
The constitution of Palaeopitus designates four ex-officio positions, although only three were filled this year. The fourth is for the president of Student Assembly, but this only applies if the president is a senior and president-elect Dean Krishna is a member of the junior class.
However, current Assembly president Green was selected to be a member of next year's group.
Bodio is also president of the Panhellenic Council, while Paul is the president of the Coed Fraternity Sorority Council.
Carpenter is next year's president of the Afro-American Society. Simermeyer is involved in NAD and the Native Leadership Project.
Barros is Upperclass Dean's Office Intern and Afro-American society member.
Ruley is an intern in the Office of Student Life and the Area Coordinator of the Fayerweathers Cluster and Einsiedler is a former undergraduate advisor, programming assistant and next year's Area Coordinator for Topliff/New Hamp and a member of the Dartmouth Asian Organization executive board.
Sleet is on the Programming Board and Committee on Standards. Berk is a former president of the Dartmouth Outing Club.
Evans is co-captain of the men's rugby club and Burgamy is a member of the women's rugby club and former chair of the Dartmouth Rainbow Alliance.
This year's Palaeopitus has worked on a variety of projects, most importantly drafting a proposal for the Social/Residential life task force which will be presented to President Wright today. They have also met with top administrators, written editorials on campus issues and served on many search committees for new administrators and staff.
