Women's lax shoots down Eagles

In Disney's "The Mighty Ducks," a coach opposing the Ducks exhorted his players, "it's not worth winning if you can't win big."

Taking this advice to heart, the Dartmouth women's lacrosse team demolished Boston College 18-5 yesterday afternoon for its third straight big win following a season-opening loss to the University of Maryland.

For the 10th-ranked Big Green -- who last weekend beat Yale 13-9 and Columbia 15-4 -- Jacque Weitzel '00 once again led the way. The All-American attacker outscored the Eagles on her own, notching six goals to go with four assists.

"I just want to help my team score goals, be it from me or someone else," Weitzel said. "It's just about helping the team win."

Weitzel's aims were accomplished by the end of the first half. The Green racked up 12 goals while allowing only one, essentially finishing the game with 30 minutes to play.

But the Green did not let up.

"Our last three games, we would play a good 30 minutes [or] a good 40 minutes," Weitzel said. "It was our goal to play 60 good minutes of Dartmouth lacrosse."

The Green continued to play well, and added to their first-half margin.

After starting goalie Sarah Hughes '02 saved three shots in the first half, the Green lost little as Ellie Leahy '01 -- who took over in goal in the second period -- saved eight shots.

In addition to Weitzel's career-best offensive output, Liz Merritt '01 put in three goals and fed an assist. Melissa Frazier '00 and Suzy Gibbons '01 each scored two goals and added an assist. Six other Dartmouth players figured into the scoring.

The Green return to Ivy competition with their home opener against the Brown Bears this Saturday at Chase Field.
