Students Were Given no Respect in the Decision

To the Editor:

The issues regarding the five points nothwithstanding I have problems with the way this was "sprung" on the campus and the student body. It is emminently disrespectful to bury a significant change in the student life on this campus in a third point in the middle of a letter that is vague and meandering.

People will debate the Greek system's place at Dartmouth, the nature of social life on the campus and the role of alcohol in both but few people will debate how poorly this situation was handled.

Dartmouth students should not receive important news about their campus from the Boston Globe. The sheer subversiveness of the administration is a testament to their apprehension over the negative feedback this plan may occur. If they had any guts they would have come out and said it to us first without making a huge public spectacle of it before the nation.

Shame on the president and the Trustees for this political ploy. I don't think the student body is averse to improvements to social life on this campus or in hearing intelligent arguments about making this campus a better place. But we sure as hell don't like being treated like disobedient kindergartners.

I pay a hell of a lot of money to come here and deserve more respect. I am not an affiliate to any house and therefore my arugments have more vested interest in how this was made public, not that it made suggestions that might fundamentally change the campus life by dimishing the Greek system. A system, that I might add, which has provided the chief social life on this campus and one that I am grateful to.
