Green athletes honored as All-Americans, All-Stars

While Dartmouth winter athletic teams paused yesterday to catch their collective breaths after an exciting weekend in which both basketball squads and the women's hockey team went a perfect 2-for-2, Dartmouth athletes from both the fall and the spring made individual headlines.

Practice officially began for several spring sports yesterday including baseball and lacrosse and therefore College Lacrosse USA -- regarded as the top web site about college lacrosse released its preseason all-American teams with four Big Green juniors filling spots on the women's side.

Midfielder Jacque Weitzel, who scored 62 goals and 10 assists for the Big Green a year ago was named to the all-American first team for attack while Melissa Frazier was named to the first team's defensive corp. Frazier tallied 19 goals and four assists for Dartmouth last year.

Defender Kate Graw, who scored 25 goals and added four assists for the Big Green, was named to College Lacrosse USA's second team for defense.

Attacker Emily Fenwick garnered honorable mention status on the CLUSA web site by virtue of her 25 goals and 13 assists last season when the Big Green advanced to the national championship semifinal round, before falling to the Virginia Cavaliers. Fenwick formerly played for the U.S. under-19 national team.

Weitzel, Frazier and Graw were all tabbed a season ago as all-Americans and are all members of the United States Women's Lacrosse Association developmental team. Amy Zimmer '01 is also a part of the squad.

Spring athletes were not the only ones making news as three Dartmouth soccer players will be spending the weekend in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. to participate in the Umbro Select All-Star Classic.

Seniors Suzanne Eastman, Bobby Meyer and Matt Nyman will represent Dartmouth as they play in the two-day event in Lockhart Stadium.

This Friday at 8 p.m., Eastman will play on the Women's College Elite team, a group of 16 hand-picked seniors, in an exhibition match against the W-League All-Stars, the only women's professional soccer league in the United States.

Eastman was the captain of the Dartmouth women's team this fall as they recorded a 16-2-2 season before falling to the North Carolina Tar Heels in the quarterfinals. She was an unanimous selection for first team All-Ivy and was named first team National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

The men will take over on Saturday as Nyman and Meyer will play as a part of the Men's College Elite team. Their squad will take on the A-League All-Stars, formed from the second most competitive league in the United States, behind only popular Major League Soccer.

Meyer was named all-Ivy League for the third consecutive time this season in addition to being tabbed for the NSCAA's third team as Dartmouth finished 10-6-1 on the campaign. Meanwhile, Nyman set the school record for shutouts and was named second-team all-Ivy. Both players were named first team all-New England.

The event will allow scouts for various professional leagues and the U. S. national teams to evaluate the top senior collegiate players in the nation.
