'Harry Met Sally' to be shown on Blunt

If you walk past Blunt Auditorium tonight and hear a little bit of hyperactive panting and moaning, don't say you weren't warned. The 2000 Class Council and Programming Board are bringing the nine-year-old romantic comedy "When Harry Met Sally ..." to the masses using a quasi-drive in set-up.

The film, most famous for its scene depicting an adorable Meg Ryan faking an orgasm in a deli, will be projected onto the Silsby side of Blunt with a projector and sound system loaned by the Office of Instructional Services. Instead of relaxing in their automobiles, however, students will have to plant their duffs on the grass if they do not bring lawn chair or towels of their own.

The "drive in" is well on its way to becoming a Dartmouth tradition, and attendance is expected to exceed 100. Past films shown have included "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and (surprise, surprise) "Animal House." According to Eric Buchman '00, of the class council, "When Harry Met Sally..." was selected for this year because of its universal appeal.

"We were asking, 'What movies haven't people seen in a while?' This is appealing to anyone. It's not really a chick flick, not really a guy movie," Buchman said. "Before 'Seinfeld' made this kind of stuff popular, 'When Harry Met Sally...' was there," Buchman said.

In case of rain, the film will be shown at Collis Commonground using the PA speakers usually reserved for dances. Inside or outside, the Class Council plans on serving movie-style refreshments (candy and soda) and giving away a $50 gift certificate for dinner for two at any restaurant in the Hanover Inn. Winners are advised to ignore Ryan's dining etiquette no matter how good the food is.
