Women's lax soars past Eagles, 17-3

Six minutes into the rain-soaked women's lacrosse game at Chase Field, Boston College looked poised, up 2-0, to upset the twelfth-ranked Big Green.

Dartmouth had other ideas, though, as they reeled off 15 unanswered goals, eventually knocking off the Golden Eagles by a score of 17-3.

Today was the official home-opener for the Big Green after their date with Yale on Saturday needed to be moved to Springfield College as a result of the weekend's inclement weather.

The Big Green (2-1, 1-0 Ivy) were led by tri-captain Jen Greene '98 who scored twice and assisted on six other Dartmouth tallies. Three of those assists were converted by fellow tri-captain Julia Morrill '98 who joined Jacque Weitzel '00 as the only two players on the field with hat tricks.

Melissa Frazier '00 opened up the Big Green scoring at 8:17 on a sweet feed from Heather McNulty '99 to cut the lead in half.

Just three minutes later, Weitzel, last week's Co-Ivy Offensive Player of the Week, worked her magic ripping the twine on a pass from Weze Shorts '99.

The go-ahead goal came at 19:18 from Greene and the eventual game-winner was scored just a minute later by Emily Fenwick '00.

Dartmouth was in control from that point forward, dominating the game through strong ball control and by committing only 20 turnovers in comparison with Boston College's 32.

In addition, Dartmouth outshot Boston College 29-10 and controlled 14 of 22 draws.

From their goal at 19:18, the Big Green managed to poke home six more goals in the next six-and-a-half minutes snipping the wings off of the Eagles.

By the halftime intermission, the Big Green had accumulated a 10-2 lead and were cruising to their second straight victory.

Greene's six assists only raises the school record, which she set last week, to 65.

The Big Green had Sarah Carlson '99 and Ellie Leahy '01 split time between the pipes, each playing a half and combining for five saves. Boston College's freshman netminder Melissa Cole played the entire game and made 12 saves while allowing 17 goals.

Boston College dropped their fifth straight game, pushing their record to 3-5. They host the Yale Bulldogs next Wednesday.

The Big Green are now unbeaten in 14 meetings with Boston College and the closest the Eagles have come to defeating Dartmouth was last year's 13-7 score.

Dartmouth travels to Brown, a team that defeated these same Eagles 13-9, on Saturday for their second Ancient Eight battle of the season.
