Lanza named scholarship finalist

Big Green football center and long snapper Dominic Lanza '98 was one of 20 football players nation-wide named yesterday as finalists for the annual National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics preseason-games Scholar-Athlete postgraduate scholarships.

The finalists were chosen from 78 nominated football players and will join 15 additional finalists representing all sports other than football.

Lanza is joined in the group of finalists by some elite players, including Heisman finalist quarterback Peyton Manning of Tennessee and Nebraska quarterback Scott Frost.

Ten of the 35 football finalists are from Division I-A institutions, while 10 are from non-Division I-A institutions. The finalists will be reviewed by NACDA's Blue Ribbon Committee made up of some of the top figures in the athletic world. The Committee will review the finalists and select 10 winners who will each receive a $5,000 grant to be used towards postgraduate studies.

In the classroom, Lanza -- a government major -- holds a 3.87 GPA.

Lanza was awarded another $5,000 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship in January. He joined only 12 other Division I players who garnered the award.

Aside from the monetary awards, Lanza has received a number of other honors. He was voted GTE first team Academic All-America, First Team All-Ivy and Third Team Division I-AA All-America.

The two-year starter and three-year letter winner has also been named a Burger King Scholar-Athlete and holds the Ivy League records for snapping the ball on the most field goals made and for the most points scored by kicking.
