Three students will sit on the nine member committee which will be charged with finding the College's next dean of the College. Student Assembly President Frode Eilertsen '99 will join two students chosen by College President James Freedman from a list of candidates which the Assembly will give to Freedman by the end of this week.
The Assembly's Membership and Internal Affairs Committee will choose four to six nominees from the group of students who submit applications before tomorrow's deadline. MIAC Chair Nahoko Kawakyu '99 said the committee will examine gender, race and campus activities when choosing from the list of applicants.
The three students will join three faculty members and three administrators whose names will be announced by the end of this week, according to MIAC member Rachel Gilliar '98.
Gilliar said Freedman told her the other six members of the list were already "set."
Only one student, Erica Ryu '98, sits on the Presidential Search Committee. Ryu was chosen without input from the Assembly.
Both Kawakyu and Gilliar said they think it is important that more than one student be included in the search process for the new dean.
"One student cannot represent the entire student body," Gilliar said. "And it's an incredible burden on them to try."
College Provost James Wright, who was dean of the faculty at the time, chaired the last search committee in 1991 when Lee Pelton was eventually chosen to replace Dean of the College Edward Shanahan. Two students sat on that search committee after the Assembly criticized Freedman's initial appointment of only one student.
