Reference to the Death of Michael Malone '93 Was Insensitive

To the Editor:

The article entitled "Drinking Ourselves to Death" in the Oct. 9 Weekend Gazette greatly disturbed me. As a good friend of Michael Malone's sister, Katie, a '98, I think the reference to his death on the cover was completely inappropriate. Although a discussion of the topic is relevant considering the latest occurrences at MIT and other universities, the haphazard manner in which Michael's death was referred to was appalling to me.

Considering the anniversary of his death was less than a week ago, I think The Dartmouth could have been a little more sensitive to the issue. Not only was I disturbed by the manner in which his death was explained, your paper gave no consideration to the feelings of Katie, a senior at Dartmouth, and her family. In the future I would hope that your paper consider all people involved with sensitive issues like these, rather than use someone's unfortunate experience as a hook for people to read an article.
