Men's lacrosse loses to Brown, 17-7, at home

Despite close play for most of the first three quarters, the men's lacrosse team fell to Brown University yesterday, 17-7, in a game which opened up only at the end.

The Big Green got behind early, but were able to struggle back to tie the game at the half. After jumping out to a 6-5 lead with 11:02 left in the third, however, Brown ran off 12 straight goals to put the game out of reach.

Brown, ranked twelfth in the nation, jumped out to an early 2-0 on goals from Brett Frood and Thomas Collard within the first five minutes of the game.

The Big Green answered right back, however, with an unassisted goal from Hank Brier '98. Then, with 5:25 left in the first, Scott Watts '97 took a pass from co-Captain Scott Hapgood '97 and beat Brown goalie Greg Cattrano.

Two more Brown goals put the Bears up 4-2 at the end of the first quarter, but Dartmouth again whittled its way back.

Senior star Brian Merritt scored with 11:19 in the second to bring the Big Green back within one, down 4-3, and then Bill Tarr '98 worked in from Cattrano's right and beat the Brown goalie one-on-one to even the score at four apiece.

Another Brown goal from Collard made it 5-4 Bears, but Hapgood scored less than a minute later to even the score at five, where it would stay until the half-time.

Coming into the second half, the Big Green were playing good defense, and -- after a streaking George Wisecarver '99 beat Cattrano to put the Green and White up 6-5 -- Dartmouth seemed to be on the verge of an upset victory.

Unfortunately, it would be their last goal for nearly two quarters, as the Bears took over, and began to show the crowd at Memorial Field why they are ranked twelfth in the nation.

After a 4-0 Brown run in the third quarter, the Bears kept pouring it on, scoring eight more in the fourth before John Whelen '98 scored in an irrelevant goal with two seconds left on the clock.

The Bears 12-0 run in the second half included four goals from Michael Satin, who led Brown in scoring on the day, and an end-to-end score by defenseman Kenneth Taheny.

Seven different players scored for Dartmouth yesterday, as Hapgood led the Big Green with a goal and two assists.

Dartmouth, now 2-6 (1-2 Ivy League), plays its next game at the University of Vermont at 3:30 p.m this Wednesday.
