The Dartmouth

Women's hockey tops Cornell, St. Lawrence

It was a sweet revenge for the women's hockey team this weekend.

After getting shut-out by fellow Ivy Leaguer Cornell 0-3 two weeks ago, the Big Green returned to their foes on Saturday to steal a huge 5-3 victory over the Big Red.

Down 2-1 by the end of the first, Dartmouth was looking at a possible repeat of the previous game against Cornell.

"During the first period they were all over us," co-Captain Amy Coelho '97 said. "But then in the second period, something happened and we stepped it up."

It was a power play goal in the second period from Sara Nelson '99 that set the team in motion.

By midway through the third period, the two teams were still locked at 2-2. But then Dartmouth co-Captain and defender Amy Coelho '97 stepped in. Coelho flipped in the go-ahead goal at 9:52 in the third on a power play to give the Big Green a one-point advantage over Cornell.

Sophomore Kathleen O'Keefe put away the next goal, finding her way past Cornell goalie Alanna Hayes and boosting the Dartmouth lead to two.

Cornell responded quickly, mirroring O'Keefe's goal at the opposite end of the ice.

With just one second left on the clock, Coelho tossed in an empty-netter to tally her second goal of the game.

The Big Green also pulled out a 4-3 win over St. Lawrence this past weekend. Thanks to St. Lawrence goalie Taryn MacLiver, who stopped 51 shots over the course of the afternoon, the game's score looks closer than it actually was.

Dartmouth came out hard and fast on Sunday, putting away three goals in the first. Wendy Soutsos '99 took credit for the first, while Coelho knocked in her second pair of goals following Soutsos.

Junior Sarah Hood sent what would turn out to be the game-winner past MacLiver at :25 in the second and then the Big Green let down.

"In the second and third periods, we just lost our concentration," Coelho said.

St. Lawrence's Kristin Bonnie bumped her team one point closer to the Big Green off a power play goal at the end of the second. Dartmouth held St. Lawrence until the final seconds, when it pulled its goalie.

This time the maneuver was successful as Andrea Blakeley's goal put her team within one. The clock, however, would run out before St. Lawrence could knock in another.

After the weekend's games, the Big Green improved to 11-8-1 overall, 8-6 in the ECAC.
