Big Green tracksters keep stride

The men's and women's track and field teams were in action this weekend as the men destroyed Vermont, 88.5-41.5 and the women finished third out of four teams at The University of Rhode Island.

On Friday night, the women's squad recorded only 25 points as they fell to UMass, 67-25, and URI, 74-25. However, Dartmouth was able to finish ahead of Holy Cross, 25-8.

Despite their third-place finish, the Big Green ran well as three women recorded second-place finishes in their respective events -- Deirdre Milligan '98 in the mile with a time of 5:12.87, Anne Devlin '99 in the 1000 meter race in 2:57.13 and Ashley Caro '00 in the 3000M in 10:26.17.

In the 500 meter race, Dartmouth's Katie Johnson '99 clocked a superb time of 1:21.32, but was edged out by URI's Val Klek (1:20.73) and Christine Kloiber (1:21.22) of UMass.

UMass and URI set the pace for the meet as the two teams battled it out and took top honors in nearly all of the events.

Back in Hanover, the men's track team was back to business as usual as it smoked Vermont. The meet started off on the right foot when Adam Nelson '97 set a school record in the shot put in his first indoor track meet of the season with a put of 58-8. Nelson and the Big Green throwers swept the top four places. Nelson's rocket of a put met the NCAA provisional qualifying standard and shattered his old record of 57-10 set back in 1994.

In other action, Michael Fortier '97 ran the mile faster than Forrest Gump, winning the event with an IC4A qualifying time of 4:16.83. Geoff Nickerson '00 finished second in 4:17.30.

There was no doubt that this was Dartmouth's afternoon as the Big Green won 11 out of the 15 events. Dartmouth's Rey Hubbard '99 won the 35 lb. weight in 51-1 3/4 and was runner-up to Nelson in the shot with 51-9 1/4.

Dave Bensinger '98 won the triple jump in 43-6 and was second in the long jump with 21-8 3/4.
