The Dartmouth women's hockey team came back from a disappointing 4-3 loss to Princeton on Saturday to capture a 7-0 shutout over Yale on Sunday.
The split weekend moved Dartmouth to 7-6 overall and 2-2 in the Ivy League.
The Big Green overwhelmed their hosts on Sunday, outshooting the Elis 85-11. Yale goalie Laurie Belliveau was the saving grace for her team, setting a new Ivy League record with her 78 saves.
"We had a big team meeting after the Princeton game and we got things straight about dedication and wanting to win," co-Captain Amy Coelho '97 said.
"In the past we've had close games with Yale," Sarah Hood '98 said. "You know you're better than them, but then Laurie [Belliveau] stones you. This time we did things right both offensively and defensively."
Junior Erin Rath put away the Big Green's first goal at 5:39 into the first period off a pass from Coelho. Hood followed Rath's lead four minutes later, propelling the puck past Belliveau. Michelyne Pinard '98 and co-Captain Malaika Little '97 earned the assists.
The team continued to rain shot after shot on Belliveau throughout the first period. Little tallied the final goal of the first period at 15:53.
The Big Green came back with equal intensity in the second and third periods, never letting down on their offensive strike. Pinard and Sarah Halsell '99 each contributed on goal, while Hood knocked in two more to complete a hat-trick.
Dartmouth goalie Melissa Siegfried '96 had 11 saves for her team.
In Saturday's match-up, Dartmouth also outshot its opponent, this time 48-13. Princeton did not give into the Big Green drive, however, and managed to make the most of every opportunity.
"We made mistakes and they capitalized," Coelho said.
Princeton came out strong in the first period, snatching a 3-1 lead and never looking back.
Emilie Schnitman '98 had Dartmouth's only first period goal off a Christine Szarek '00 assist.
The Big Green was able to hold the Tigers to no score in the second. At the same time, Jessica Clark '98 moved the Big Green one step closer to their opponent, putting away a netter at 18:39 with help from Halsell and Coelho.
Princeton's Karen Chernisky sent in the game-winning goal at 3:09 in the third off a pass from Mandy Pfeiffer.
Hood was able to put away one more goal before the buzzer but the Big Green still came up short, losing 4-3 to their Ivy foes.
"[Hood] played very well in both games," Coelho said. "She has this drive to want to win."
Hood leads her team in points on the season with nine goals and 11 assists for 20 points.
The team takes on Cornell and St. Lawrence at home next weekend.
The Cornell competition, an Ivy League game, should prove a good match-up for the Big Green. This past weekend, the Big Red defeated Northeastern University, a team that Dartmouth has lost to twice this season.
"St. Lawrence is having a tough time this year. But it's always a chippy, hard-fought game. It's not going to be a walk," Hood said.
"Going into last weekend we controlled our own destiny," Coelho said. "Now we've lost, it's a do or die situation."
