Ski teams fall just shy of 2nd place at Carnival

Battling tough conditions and even tougher competition, the Dartmouth ski teams placed third overall at this past weekend's St. Lawrence University Carnival.

Just saying the team finished in third doesn't do justice to the effort put forth by the team, or to how close they came to taking second among the 15 NCAA Division 1 eastern collegiate teams competing.

"Things are starting to come together," women's coach Bruce Lingelbach said of the weekend's results.

On the second day of the two day event, warm weather brought rain and wet snow conditions to Mt. Van Hoevenberg, putting every skier at a disadvantage.

Excelling for Dartmouth in Satuday's distance events were Paul Stone '00, Nils Arvold '00, and Steve Donahue '99, who placed third, 10th, and 15th respectively.

In the women's distance races, Abi Holt '99 placed fourth, while Jessica Smith '99 skied into fifth.

On the giant slalom course, Dartmouth racers continued to hit pay dirt, with Ben Robinson '97 finishing fourth. Making his collegiate debut after coming off of a long injury, Dave Viele '98 placed fifth for the Big Green. For the women, Kate Maher '99 placed sixth, and freshman Jenny Viele slid into eighth.

In action on Friday, each Nordic team settled for silver, finishing behind the carnival winning UVM team.

In other action on the day, the alpiners took on the icy slopes and tenuous turns with mixed results.

Robinson showed no fear in taking second for the day's races, while Maciek Zwiejski '00, Kyle Webb '97, and Jaimie Reigle '99 rounded out the Dartmouth finishers, earning the 10th, 11th, and 13th spots respectively.

"We're getting better and better," Laura Turner '98 said, "and we definitely haven't peaked yet."
