Provost's Point Misinterpreted at Voices Discussion

To the Editor:

As a member of the gathering with Provost Lee Bollinger Wednesday evening, I would like to correct a serious error in the story, "Bollinger discusses First Amendment" [Oct. 3]. Bollinger, in discussing campus speech codes did not, as the article suggests, advocate the view that "campus speech codes adopted by American universities in recent years stem from the presence of 'the liberal left [population] from the '60s.'"

In fact, the Provost expressly stated that he gives only limited credence to this view, and made this particular statement while summarizing arguments promulgated by such conservatives as Dinesh D'Souza. The author should take more care with his written word, as the record now misrepresents our Provost as against a population he counts himself a part.
