Pedestrian sustains injuries from accident

William Smith, 75, of West Lebanon was struck by a moving car Saturday evening as he was crossing East Wheelock Street in front of the Hanover Inn.

He sustained head and leg injuries and was transported, by ambulance, to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.

At about 7 p.m., 20-year-old Daniela Schroter of Buhla, Germany, hit Smith while driving a 1984 Volvo station wagon, according to a Hanover Police Department press release.

Hanover Police Officer Jeffrey Fleury said he believes that poor weather conditions that night were significant factors in the accident.

"It was raining and there were very windy conditions that made visibility poor," he said.

Fleury said alcohol was not involved in the accident and the speed of the car was not a factor.

Schroter had two children with her in the vehicle which was moving eastbound on East Wheelock Street, the release said. She and the children were not injured.

Smith was treated at DHMC for a fractured leg and remains in fair condition, according to a hospital spokesperson.

The hospital declined to comment on his prognosis.

The bump to Smith's head was not serious, the spokesperson said. Smith remains in the hospital for observation.

Fleury said no charges are pending against Schroter although Smith may choose to file a civil suit.

"We have completed our investigation and are not filing criminal charges," Fleury said.

Fleury said Schroter, who was driving a borrowed car, was vacationing in New Hampshire.
