Tracksters compete at ECAC/IC4As: Manwaring, Winchester, Nelson bring home wins from meet

Kristin Manwaring '96, Amy Winchester '96 and Adam Nelson '97 each added another feather to their caps this weekend at the ECAC/IC4A championships at George Mason University.

On Sunday Manwaring blew away competition in the 1,500 meters, clocking 4:23.00 for the easy win.

Luckily for the egos of her competitors, she ran her fastest time on Saturday in the qualifying heats, a blistering 4:18.94.

Her time breaks her own school record, but more importantly is good enough to automatically qualify her for the NCAA Championships and the U.S. Olympic Trials.

Winchester also broke her own school record en route to a win in the shotput with a heave of 50-10 1/2. This was her first outdoor win at the ECAC meet in the shot put. She also placed fifth in the discus with a throw of 152-1.

Nelson stole the headlines for the men with his stadium record throw of 59-5 1/2. It was his second IC4A title in that event. He later placed third in the discus.

Alex Ghanotakis '97 was another athlete who had a fine meet, placing twice. He took runner-up honors in the discus with a toss of 181-1 and sixth in the hammer thrown on Saturday with a distance of 195-11.

Two other men represented the Big Green very well. Jack Dwyer '96 nabbed fourth place in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:29.0 and Gordon Spaeth '97 placed ninth in the decathlon, running up 5,788 points.

The 5,000 was a good event for the women competing as well. Maribel Sanchez '96 automatically qualified herself for the NCAA Championships with a time of 16:17.38, good for third place in the event.

Deirdre Milligan '98 was not far behind her in eighth place with a time of 16:57.90, a provisional NCAA qualifier. Also running well were Bethany Crenshaw '99 with 17:03 and Kristin Pierce '96 with 16:20.

Rounding out the scoring for the women was Sarah Howald '96 who tossed the javelin 140-10.
