Susan Marine named new SAAP coordinator

Susan Marine, who currently works with the Victim's Assistance team at Colorado College, will replace Liza Veto at the beginning of Summer term as the coordinator of the Sexual Abuse Awareness Program.

The Victim's Assistance team is Colorado College's equivalent of the SAAP, Marine said.

"Right now I do the same kind of thing at Colorado College [that I will do at Dartmouth]," Marine said.

Veto, who has been the acting coordinator of the SAAP since August 1994, said the job is, "in a nutshell, doing the education and prevention work in sexual abuse at Dartmouth."

Marine was one of 70 applicants for the position who were eventually narrowed down to three candidates, said Women's Resource Center Director Giavanna Munafo.

Munafo said Marine communicates well with students and is easy to talk to.

"I think she's a really good one-on-one kind of person," Munafo said. "Susan has a lot of experience in the area of sexual abuse education."

"We were looking for someone who had both commitment to this issue and experience in higher education [and experience] working with this age group," Veto said. "We were looking for someone who had a counseling background."

Munafo said Marine is talented at organizing informational programs. "She'll be good at putting together educational programs for the entire campus," Munafo said.

Marine is also committed to issues of diversity, Munafo said. Veto said the issue of how sexual abuse affects diverse communities was an important one in the search process.

Marine said she plans to continue her education after working at the College.

"I just finished graduate school in 1994, so this was my first job out of graduate school," Marine said of her job at Colorado College. She said after working at the College, she will return to school to get her Ph.D. in college administration.

Miranda Johnson '97 and Cassie Eherenberg '96 organized presentations for students to meet the three final candidates for the position.

Johnson said the students were looking for "someone with knowledge of sexual abuse and assault issues" as well as "someone who students would be comfortable talking to and someone who had the expertise in programming the position requires."

Johnson said Marine filled this job description.

"She had very good contact with students," Johnson said. "She was very personable and she got students involved and engaged in discussion."

Marine said one of the reasons she became interested in the job at the College was that it allows her to focus on issues of sexual abuse

In addition to her work with sexual abuse at Colorado College, Marine is currently the college's equivalent of an Area Coordinator, Marine said.

"I decided to do it full time and get out of residential life stuff," Marine said.

Marine said she originally became interested in the job when she saw the opening listed in the Chronicle of Higher Education more than a year ago.

At the time, Marine was still committed to another year at Colorado. "When I saw it open again," Marine said, she applied for it.

Veto said Marine "is going to be a great addition to the Dartmouth community, so I'm excited to see her come."

Marine and Veto will overlap for two weeks in June and July, after which Marine will take over completely.

Veto previously told The Dartmouth she is leaving the College because she plans to pursue a master's degree in social work at either Washington University or the University of Pennsylvania.
