Lightweights nab 1st Ivy victory

After many long months of training, the Big Green men's lightweight crew team finally got what it was waiting for -- an Ivy League win.

The team took a narrow victory over the Cornell Big Red last weekend.

It was the Cornell crew that jumped out to a lead at the start of the race. Dartmouth's first boat was quick to pick up the slack, however, and slid past its Ivy League opponent by the end of the race.

The Big Green crossed the finish line of the 2,000 meter course just four-tenths of a second in front of the Big Red, shutting them out 5:49.5 to 5:49.9.

The second varsity crew showed no signs of trouble in its race. This boat finished in 6:03.1, while Cornell came through the finish six minutes later, ending in 6:09.2.

Cornell was able to finish ahead of the third varsity four, ending up five minutes before the Big Green.

The first freshmen boat continued to shine this season, picking up yet another win. The boat, undefeated so far this season, finished a full 11 minutes ahead of its competitor.

The second freshmen boat (6:29.5) did not fair as well as the first, finishing behind Cornell (6:22.2).

Because the Connecticut River was raging last weekend, the races were moved to St. Paul's School's Turkey Pond.

The team is now in preparation for Eastern Sprints which will take place in one week in Worchester, Mass. Sprints represent everything the team has been working for this season.

Beyond Sprints, the team can look towards the national lightweight championships which will take place on June 1.
