Rash of bike thefts plagues Hanover

Five bicycles were stolen from various locations around Hanover and on the Dartmouth campus Monday and yesterday in a rash of bike thefts.

According to a Safety and Security bulletin, between 3:45 p.m. Monday and 12:45 a.m. Tuesday, $2,310 worth of bicycles were stolen.

One bicycle was stolen from Topliff residence hall, Shawmut Bank and the east side of Baker library. Two bicycles were taken from Davis Varsity House according to the bulletin.

None of the bikes were properly locked, Safety and Security Officer Rebel Roberts said.

"Three of the five were unlocked," she said. "Two of the five were locked to themselves."

Roberts did not comment on who might have stolen the bicycles, but she said Safety and Security does investigate all complaints.

She said Safety and Security has an officer who looks into bicycle thefts and passes along information to the Hanover Police Department.

Roberts said students could protect their bikes from theft by learning how to lock them properly.

She suggested students "use a sturdy lock, like a U-lock or a Cobra chain lock and secure the frame of the bike to something, as well as the tire."

She also said students should register their bicycles with Safety and Security, because having a serial number on file makes bikes less appealing to would-be snatchers.

Roberts also warned students to protect their gel seats and detachable tires from theft as well.

She recommended that students either take their seats with them or use a "seat leash," a cable lock for seats.

Roberts noted that other bicycle thefts go unreported, and urged students to report all incidents or suspicious behavior.

Roberts also said students can protect their bikes by renting a hanging bike rack for their rooms from the Office of Residential Life.

She said ORL requires a $50 deposit and a $15 rental fee for three terms.
