Fencing team places sixth in tournament

The Dartmouth fencing team finished its season two weekends ago as they traveled to UNH to compete in the New England Championships.

The Big Green fencers managed to come away with a sixth place overall finish in the twelve-team field. Boston College finished with the overall victory.

Despite the disappointing finish, the weekend was highlighted by some strong individual performances.

Zach Stein '96 battled his way to victory in the epee competition. Stein, who struggled at first, only got stronger as the competition went on and ended up as the last qualifier for the medal round, just squeaking by with a 6-4 record.

"I just barely scraped by to get into the final round," Stein said.

Upon reaching the medal round, however, he fenced like a man possessed, earning a three-way tie for first.

In the tiebreaker, Stein clearly dominated, pitching a shutout in both of his wins and sailing to the individual title.

"Once it got down to the final round, people started getting tired," Stein said. "I had to fence someone who I had already lost to twice, but I got a couple of quick touches on him and he got a little nervous. In the end I think I just wanted it more than he did."

Also bringing home medals were Ben Herman '96, who received fourth place in the sabre event, Patrick Craven '97, finishing eighth in foil, and Matt Richardson '97, who captured eighth in epee.

The lone highlight on the women's side came from Christina Campo '98, who earned a fifth-place finish in the women's epee.
