Anonymous Group Parallels Unabomber In Use of Press

To the Editor:

One year ago, The New York Times and The Washington Post bowed to threats from the terrorist known as the Unabomber and printed his fringe political tract, ostensibly in the interest of public safety. At the time I was disgusted by the newspapers' caving to terrorist demands; now I find similar behavior in The Dartmouth.

The D, like The Times and The Post, has consented to serve as a mouthpiece for criminals. The anonymous group who dumped manure in front of Alpha Chi Alpha fraternity and Beta Theta Pi fraternity are, of course, hardly comparable to the Unabomber, but the principle remains the same: an otherwise respectable newspaper has allowed itself to be used to advertise the ideals of criminals.

Far be it from me to say that the now-notorious Beta poem and the Alpha Chi pledge script are unimportant or unworthy of public discourse; certainly they are legitimate topics. However, there are a number of people and organizations on campus with valid views regarding these incidents. The D would be well-advised to seek out and report their opinions, and not encourage vandals by giving their anonymous opinions special attention.
