Women's swimming ends season at ECACs

The women's swim team closed its season at the ECAC Championships held at Harvard, as the Big Green finished sixth out of ten teams with 301.5 points.

"I think the season was made great by the women on the team," Emilie Ellis '97 said. "We all supported each other and have a lot of memories from the time we spend with each other."

"Even though I didn't get my best times, I valued the opportunity to race and am only more motivated to come back stronger next year," Ellis added.

On the first day, the 200 yard freestyle relay team of Emily Atkinson '99, Allison Cuff '98, Ellis and Wendy Simon '98 put Dartmouth on the board with a 10th place finish in 1:43.52. Co-Captain Deb Whitney '96 finished eighth in the 50 yard freestyle in 24.73.

Diver Courtney DuBious '99 surprised the Big Green, finishing third overall in the one meter competition scoring 404.50 points, only 12 points behind the winner.

Dartmouth finished the first day in sixth place behind Cornell.

On the second day, Karyn Bysshe '96 took sixth in the 400 yard individual medley, finishing in 4:34.13. Simon took seventh in the 100 yard butterfly in 59.28. Whitney finished sixth in the 200 yard freestyle in 1:54.40.

Andrea Hill '97 then turned in Dartmouth's best performance of the day, finishing second in the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:05.84. Dartmouth closed the second day with 184.0 points, still in sixth place behind Cornell.

The Big Green closed the season Saturday, with its best performances of the year. Whitney opened the day, taking fourth in the 100 yard freestyle in 53.10.

Then in the 200 yard breaststroke, Hill did what no woman swimmer in Dartmouth's history has done -- won an event in the ECAC tournament. Hill finished with the fast time of 2:18.21, eight tenths of a second under the NCAA "B" cut.

Bysshe and Catherine Sterling '98 later combined to keep the streak alive in the 200 yard butterfly. Bysshe finished first in 2:06.93 and Sterling followed closely, finishing second in 2:06.95.

DuBois continued her strong performances on the diving board, taking ninth in the three meter diving competition with 384.15 points. Dartmouth ended the day and its season in the 400 yard freestyle relay, finishing seventh in 3:37.92.

Despite the upsurge in performances on Saturday, the Big Green were still unable to over take sixth place Cornell as they ended in seventh.

Brown won the Championships with 598.5 points, and Yale was second with 572.5.
