The Big Green ski team finally broke through last weekend and captured their first overall victory of the season at the Williams Winter Carnival.
In the process Dartmouth also thwarted the University of Vermont's bid to go through the carnival season undefeated.
Dartmouth's victory was keyed by several tremendous performances on the nordic team.
On the men's side, Cory Smith '96 and Colter Leys '96 finished second and third respectively, in both the 11 kilometer freestyle and the nine kilometer classic pursuit.
In both races the only competitor that managed to best Smith and Leys was the dominant Thorodd Bakken of UVM.
The women were lead by Denali Kemppel, who skied to a fourth place finish in both women's nordic races.
Due to a faulty timer, the giant slalom races were cancelled, but that didn't slow down the men's and women's alpine teams. The men's alpine came out on top, and the women finished second behind Middlebury.
The women were led, as usual, by Jen Collins '99, who was victorious in the women's slalom. Collins withstood her toughest test of the season, however, from teammate Kylie Booth '99 hanging on to win by a mere .32 seconds.
The victory was Collins fifth consecutive win. Of the eight alpine races this year, Collins has won seven.
On the men's side, Andy Martin '96 captured the men's slalom title with a time of 1:26.66. J.P. Daigneault '97 also skied well, coming in fourth.
Jeremiah Thompson '96 and Jaime Reigle '99 rounded out the top ten, finishing ninth and tenth respectively.
The Dartmouth ski team will try to carry this momentum into the EISA Championships, which will be at the Middlebury Snow Bowl in Middlebury, Vt. next weekend.
This is the last carnival before the NCAA championships in March, which the Big Green plan to attend.
