To the Editor:
I would like to correct the statement attributed to me in yesterday's article about the Committee of Chairs meeting held on Monday February 12. I did not say that my department "wouldn't" report honor principle violations to the COS. We have, and we do. My point was more complex: foreign language and literature assignments pose particular kinds of temptations that the COS has yet to address. Many of my colleagues hesitate before taking violations through a disciplinary mechanism that does not yet acknowledge the specific nature of learning in the various departments. This is one of the areas that needs reform.
