The Brown Bears managed to come back from a two-goal deficit against Dartmouth's women's hockey team this past weekend at Brown's Meehan Auditorium. Neither team could find the net during the ensuing five-minute overtime, and Dartmouth came home with a 2-2 tie.
The tie put Dartmouth's overall record at 14-5-1 on the season. The team remains at 6-1 in the ECAC and moves to 4-0-1 in the Ivy League.
The tie will keep Dartmouth in first place in the Ivy League, as it is the only team still undefeated. Brown had one loss and one tie going into the game.
"In terms of the outcome, obviously we would have liked a win, but it was good since we were playing there," co-Captain Michelle Erickson '96 said.
"They're a tough team, and they really needed a win."
The first period was all Dartmouth in terms of scoring. Phoebe Manchester '96 put Dartmouth on the score board with a goal at 8:59. Two-and-a-half minutes later, Malaika Little '97 fed the puck to Sarah Hood '98 who put it past Brown goalie Michele Mortensen to give the Big Green a two-goal advantage.
Dartmouth spent four minutes in the penalty box during the first, but even with this one-man advantage, Brown was unable to score.
The scoring trend reversed in the second period. Brown gained the momentum during two more Dartmouth penalties and was able to put in two goals, one from Becky Kellar and one from Katie King.
King scored Brown's second goal during a power play as Dartmouth co-Captain Sarah Howald '96 sat out two minutes for slashing. The goal went in at 18:02 in the second period.
Howald cited the high number of penalties as deterring from Dartmouth's play.
"It's definitely hard when you're killing penalties for a lot of the first two periods," she said. "It ruins the flow."
Despite four Brown penalties and one Dartmouth penalty in the third, all but one (hitting from behind) for roughing, neither team could capitalize on the advantage. The 20-minute period went by without a goal, leaving the score tied at the end of regular play.
"The refs were definitely a factor," Howald said. "You didn't know what they were going to call. They were very inconsistent."
The tie sent the game into overtime. At 2:52 into the five-minute overtime, refs called a checking penalty on Howald. This penalty left Dartmouth a man-down for the remaining two minutes.
The Big Green defended well and ended the time without a Brown goal.
Dartmouth goalie Sarah Tueting '98 played a major role in preserving the tie. Tueting denied six shots during the five minutes of overtime to give her a total of 38 saves for the game.
