The Dartmouth

Women's hockey wins

It's a win, and the women's hockey team will take it no matter what it looked like.

The team faced off against Middlebury last night in Thompson Arena. Besides Dartmouth's ending up on top, 5-1, not much can be said for the game.

"It wasn't a great game," Coach George Crowe said of the effort. "There were a few flashes and such, but it was really an uninspired performance."

Despite dominating throughout the first period, let alone the whole game, Dartmouth finished up the first with only a one point advantage over the Panthers.

That one goal did not come until over 14 minutes into the period. Sarah Hood '98 and Malaika Little '97 used a give-and-go to allow Hood to knock the puck into the net.

Five minutes into the second, Dartmouth went on a scoring streak, putting away three goals in as many minutes. Phoebe Manchester '96 started the rally off, with an assist from co-Captain Michelle Erickson '96.

For their next trick, co-Captain Sarah Howald '96 dumped the puck back to Hood who tallied her second goal of the night.

"Hoody had a great game," Crowe said. "It might have been one of her best. She's just moving up to another level of play."

The streak wrapped up with a freshmen combination of Sarah Halsell to Kathleen O'Keefe.

At 9:31, Sara Vogler '96 began a two-minute penalty for tripping. Middlebury capitalized on this opportunity and, after several attempts, finally scored just over a minute into the power play.

Vogler rounded out the scoring in the third with a slapshot to bring the final score to 5-1. The win improved Dartmouth's overall record to 14-5-0.

"We really played down," Hood said. "It's disappointing to play that way after three or four great games."

Dartmouth will take a week to regroup and resumes play next Wednesday at home against Boston College.
