Women's basketball wins two on the road

Coming off a disappointing 20 point loss to Harvard last weekend, the women's basketball team responded with two impressive wins on the road.

Friday, the Big Green overcame a weaker Columbia team 60-48 and then traveled on to Cornell Saturday where Dartmouth beat the Big red 65-55.

Against Columbia, the Big Green were disappointed with their play but at the same time still managed to pull off the needed League victory.

"We played really bad," Sally Annis '97 said. "We were lucky to come away with the victory. Everything was just off."

Against the Lions, Annis was the leading scorer for the Big Green with 13 points. Senior Captain Jen Stamp and freshman standout Gyvonne Pinkston each added 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Poor play also plagued the Lions who ended the night with a miserable 23 percent shooting average from the field.

Not only did the Big Green enter Saturday's game against Cornell with a win under their belt, but they also entered with the knowledge that Cornell had just upset Harvard the night before.

"We knew Cornell had to be a good team if they were able to beat Harvard," Annis said. "It was nice to come back with two wins."

Stamp led the Big Green with 22 points which included four three-pointers -- a career high for the senior. Annis again tallied 13 points -- adding three more three-pointers to her Dartmouth record.

At half, the Big Green led Cornell 33-18, but in the second half, the Big Red's leading scorer Mary LaMacchia came on scoring in double digits for Cornell. But her efforts came up short as Dartmouth came out top to boost its record to 9-4 overall (2-1 Ivy League).

More importantly, Harvard's loss puts the Big Green back in a tie for first place in the Ivy League.

"Basically we still need to work on our overall game," Annis said. "We have to work on putting two good games together, especially when we are on the road."

The Dartmouth women will remain on the road with their next home game not until Feb. 2. Next up for the Big Green will be Boston University this Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
