Ski teams compete at St. Lawrence

The Big Green ski team was in action for the second weekend in a row at the St. Lawrence Carnival in Lake Placid, NY, where they took home second place behind the University of Vermont.

Once again the men's alpine team proved to be Dartmouth's biggest strength, as it captured its second straight team alpine title. This victory was highlighted by several outstanding individual performances.

The Big Green placed three skiers in the top five of the men's slalom, lead by Andy Pennock '99 who finished second with a time of 1:45.26, less than half a second off the winning pace. Jeremiah Thompson '96 and Ben Robinson '97 finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Peter Ruprecht '98 gained his first collegiate victory in the men's giant slalom, with a time of 2:11.28. Andy Martin '96 came in second at 2:11.63.

The men's nordic team also performed well, gaining second place behind UVM.

Cory Smith '96 finished third in the 17.5 km freestyle race to break up a UVM sweep of the top four spots. Dartmouth's Colter Leys '96 turned in an impressive fifth place finish.

"I think we skied a very good race in less than ideal conditions," Smith said. " I definitely think we're headed in the right direction."

The women, who were plagued by untimely crashes, struggled to a fourth place finish in the alpine competition. But they did receive a boost from a few strong individual showings.

For the second week in a row Jen Collins '99 won the women's downhill. She was joined in the top three by Kylie Booth '99, who finished third. Booth also placed fourth in the giant slalom.
