Women's soccer falls to Brown 2-0

So far this year, the women's soccer team has been taking a ride a bumpy roller coaster, highlighted by impressive wins over top national teams but then plagued by subpar performances which have resulted in disappointing losses.

Yesterday was one of those losses for the Big Green. A loss that stings and will be tough to forget.

Dartmouth took to the field against a Brown team known to pose problems for the Big Green. Last year, the Bears handed the Big Green two 2-1 losses, one coming in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

But this year's Brown team had been struggling with four straight losses and an 0-2 record in the Ivies. The Big Green were looking to capitalize on the faltering Bears, but in the end were unable to do so.

"I think they are a difficult team to play against," Coach Steve Swanson said. "I didn't think they had many chances, but what they did get, they capitalized on, and we didn't."

The game started out somewhat slow with neither team following through, but ten minutes before half, the Bears would kick into gear and hand Dartmouth two quick goals.

Poopy Gilliam would score off an assist from Holly Hargroder 35:06 into the game and one minute and 30 seconds later, Brown's Kira Kania-Llyod capitalized again for the Bears.

"I thought we played well," Swanson said. "You are going to make mistakes, and we paid for them. It was unfortunate because those were really the only chances they had, while we had several."

The Big Green would leave the field at half down 2-0 despite outshooting the Bears eight to four.

The second half was all Green. Dartmouth dominated Brown's end of the field but just came up short in key situations.

"It's all about putting it in the net, and we didn't do that," Swanson said. "I think we broke down in some areas like the finishing shot."Dartmouth would once again outshoot the Bears in the second half five to three but was unable to put the ball in the net.

Brown goalkeeper Sarah Kelly was partly responsible for the Big Green problems. She had eight saves on the day.

Dartmouth will look to avenge this loss when they travel to Boston College on Wednesday.

"We're struggling to find some momentum," Swanson said. "With the schedule we have, it's difficult, but we just have to get that ball rolling."
