Strong support for National Coming Out Day surprising, promising

To the Editor:

I would like to thank everyone who made National Coming Out Day, Oct. 11, a success. This was the first time I know of that National Coming Out Day was publicly celebrated by students at Dartmouth. It also marked the first time there was any organized opportunity for students to show their support for their gay, lesbian and bisexual classmates. The gay community on campus has come a long way in reaching out to fellow students. We were rewarded with overwhelming and enthusiastic support.

I'd especially like to thank everyone who wore a rainbow sticker around campus. They were given out in the Hop and all 500 were taken in a few hours! Next year I hope there will be more. Also, I want to thank the people on the second and third floors of Mass Row, Hitchcock, and Russell Sage for agreeing to fly rainbow flags from their windows. I must criticize myself for being surprised that so many people were willing to do that. I underestimated the open- and fair-mindedness of my classmates. I am sure all the visible support has helped Dartmouth students who were wary about coming out on this campus. Though much more needs to be done for those still in the proverbial closet, I for one am more confident that I, as an "out" gay student, am accepted and supported by my classmates. Thank You!
