Rugby kills Amherst: Men prepare for title match this weekend

The Men's Rugby team plays the University of Connecticut this Saturday in a match that will determine the New England Championship -- a title the Big Green has held for six of the past 10 years.

The game, which will be at home on Chase Field, will be a game fans won't want to miss.

This past weekend, the ruggers showed just why they are in a position to win it again, as they routed Amherst 74-11.

Amherst came into the match looking to repeat its victory of last spring over the Big Green. Although Amherst was 1-2, they saw the Big Green as the last looming challenge since a win would have likely put them in position for a playoff berth.

But Dartmouth would have none of it.

The Big Green turned the first half into a scoring spree, posting their first try within minutes of the kickoff and continuing to thrash Amherst out to a 52-6 halftime lead.

Dartmouth's dominance was most evident at one point when they returned a kick caught behind their 22-meter line 80 meters for a try -- the ball passing through every team member's hands in an almost continuous run interrupted by only one ruck.

The pace abated in the second half, as the Big Green allowed Amherst more time of possession. Amherst was able to add a try to the two penalty kicks they made in the first half, but not without considerable effort.

Dartmouth jealously defended its try-zone on one goal line stand, driving back close to ten charges, including one off a penalty, from five meters out.

The strong defensive effort would hold Amherst at 11 and kept the Big Green undefeated on the season.
