"You either make dust, or eat it."
This phrase is written on the front door of the Dartmouth field hockey office. This past weekend, it proved to be true.
In a teeth-clenching overtime win against Yale on Saturday, the Big Green improved their record to 4-3, 1-1 in the Ivies. Furthermore, they gave the Bulldogs a taste of their dirt.
"We played extremely well." Coach Julie Dayton said. "We earned every bit of our win and persevered to the end. We simply wore Yale down, they all looked very tired afterwards."
Yale was the first to score, when early in the first half Lindsay Hobbs made the game 1-0. The Big Green came right back, and co-Captain Cynthia Roberts '96 tied the game up with assists from Kathleen Hickey '96 and Kelly Hannigan '97.
The score was tied at halftime, but soon into the second half, Yale scored again and remained in the lead. Dartmouth struggled to come back after many attempts to score but was unsuccessful-- until the last two minutes.
With 1:22 left in regulation, Allison Pell '96 scored on a penalty stroke and tied the game. The Big Green stayed strong in overtime, when Weze Shorts '99 netted the winning goal.
"This is a huge win for us," Dayton said. "We showed a lot of character in the way we played and simply outlasted them. It was a total team effort, and we played to win. "
Co-captain Lauren Demski '96 had 11 saves in the Dartmouth goal. She now has 47 in the season.
Dartmouth will find welcome relief this afternoon as the Big Green will finally be able to display their talent at home. After seven consecutive away games, the Dartmouth women are ready to show Hanover what they are made of.
In its first home game, Dartmouth will battle in-state rival University of New Hampshire today at 3:30 p.m. on Chase Field.
