Crew heavyweights win Head of Conn.

The men's heavyweight crew team kicked off their 1995-1996 season in impressive style, as they captured the gold medal at the Head of the Connecticut regatta on Sunday.

The Dartmouth four man crew, Tom Gilmore '96, Todd Newman '96, James Jarrett '97, Brian Palm '96 and coxwain Trevor Peterson '96, scorched the rest of their collegiate competitors by more than thirty seconds.

Dartmouth covered the three and a half mile course in 18:10. The New York Athletic Club, a team of mostly post graduate and national team caliber rowers, came in second with a time of 18:16. The next closest competitor, Brown, was well off the pace with a time of 18:43.

"We had a strong lineup and we were fortunate to get good racing conditions, like the ones we're used to practicing in," Newman said.

Newman also felt that the key to the Big Green's victory was in their extremely strong start.

"We started the race from the second position, but after the first quarter of a mile or so, we had already pulled ahead of Northeastern," he said.

From there, the Big Green never looked back, as they built up their lead, and distanced themselves from both Brown and Northeastern.

When asked how Dartmouth outclassed their collegiate competitors by such a considerable margin, Newman was unsure.

"Some of the other teams, like Brown, may have made their eight man boat their priority boat and not their four man, like we did," he said.

Whatever the circumstances were, Newman was obviously excited about the team's performance.

"We just really came together on Sunday and rowed a great race," Newman said. "It's always nice to win your first race."

Next up for the Big Green crew team is the Bausch & Lomb regatta to be held in Rochester, NY this upcoming weekend.

This highly competitive event, should feature a top notch field with most of the premier crews from the east coast.
