Tough finish at Easterns for crew

The varsity women's rowing team placed sixth at the Eastern Sprints yesterday, while both varsity men's teams failed to earn medals.

The varsity lightweights finished fourth, one place out of medal contention. The heavies finished ninth.

This is the first time in six years that neither men's team has come home with a medal.

In the women's race, Princeton finished first, setting a course record of 6:10 for the 2000-meter race.

Varsity Captain Erica Ruliffson '95 said she and her teammates were disappointed.

"Overall the varsity didn't do as well as they wanted to," she said.

In the petite finals, the varsity heavies had a strong first 1500 meters, but were outsprinted by Cornell and Boston University in the final stretch.

Varsity Coxswain Trevor Peterson '96 said his crew is "very disappointed ... It really sucks to get rowed through in the last hundred meters."

Peterson said the poor performance in the morning heat was caused, in part, by poor conditions.

"There was a very, very strong headwind. Basically whitecaps all the way down the course ... We didn't handle conditions well," he said.

But Peterson said he is optimistic about the IRA competition June 1-3.

"The fact that we're off next weekend allows us to do two weeks of preparation and hard training ... We have a couple scores to settle," he said.

Conditions also adversely affected the Dartmouth lightweights, though this time it was an afternoon cross wind that retarded the rowers.

The wind may have had a stronger influence on the lane Dartmouth drew for each race.

The JV lightweights finished sixth and the freshmen finished fifth in novice competition.

The Dartmouth lightweights will compete once more this season at the Lightweight Nationals June 3.
