Three women's laxers garner first team All-American honors: Devens '96, Edwards '95 and Holleran '95 make first team

After several hours of deliberation, the All-American Selection Committee announced the 1995 Brine/IWLCA All-American women's lacrosse teams late Monday night.

The committee found spaces for four Dartmouth players among the three teams: Sarah Devens '96, Jenny Edwards '95, co-Captain Lauren Holleran '95, and co-Captain Mya Mangawang '95.

Holleran, Edwards and Devens were chosen for the All-American first team, while Mangawang made the All-American third team.

This year marks the third time that Holleran has made the first team. The other three are first time All-American honorees.

Holleran and Devens were chosen as attack on the first team. Holleran tallied 73 points this season, including 53 goals and 20 assists, and holds 11 school records. Devens totaled 51 points with 36 goals and 15 assists.

"Sarah [Devens] definitely has had a tremendous year," Patton said. "It's been a long time coming for her."

"I'm happy to have been named an All-American, even more happy for Devil," Sarah Devens, Holleran said. "She deserves to get some recognition as an outstanding lacrosse player- she does so much for our team. Also, the fact that she didn't get first team All-Ivy is ridiculous, and being named a first team All-American shows that the Ivy League made a serious mistake."

"I feel much better about this decision than the All-Ivies," Coach Amy Patton said. "Those players deserving of recognition got it."

Edwards and Mangawang received recognition for defense. Both Edwards and Mangawang only began playing lacrosse as sophomores, having never picked up a stick before then.

"For Mya [Mangawang] and Jenny [Edwards] to start lacrosse as sophomores and for them, their senior year, to make one of the All-American teams is incredible," Patton said.

The All-American teams are picked by a committee made up of Patton, who covers the North, Penn State Coach Julie Williams, who covers the Mid-Atlantic region, Loyola Coach Diane Atkins, who represents the South and Princeton Coach Chris Sailer, who oversees the whole committee.

The committee bases its decisions on players' statistics and on coaches' recommendations. Recommendations are most important for defenders, who have virtually no statistics.

As for the future for these three seniors and one junior, the trials for the U.S. Elite Team are in two weeks. Whether they will go or not, still remains to be seen.

Holleran is on the U.S. Elite Team this year and will have to try out again in order to be considered for next year's team. Holleran will play in two exhibition games against Wales this weekend with the Elite Team.

"I've had a great time playing on the team for the last couple years and I'm psyched to try out again," Holleran said.

"I hope that they're going to want to continue with lacrosse," Patton said. "They're all very talented lacrosse players."

Holleran remains a top contender to earn national offensive Player of the Year honors.

The Player of the Year will be announced on June 9 at the All-American banquet which will honor all players who received All-American honors.

Patton, who sits on the committee that selects the winner, refused to comment whether Holleran will receive the award.
