The women's varsity sailing team placed third last weekend in the National Collegiate Sailing Championships in San Diego, Calif.
The Big Green were in fourth place with 102 points after two days of competition but made a remarkable comeback on Sunday afternoon to actually pressure opposing teams for first place.
Led by three-time All-American and Captain Whitney Conner '95, the Big Green proved itself worthy of national recognition. Conner was joined by crew Carey Clifford '95 and Blair Seidler '96 to compete in the A division.
In the B division, Leigh Lucas '98 was skipper for the Big Green and her crew alternated between Catherine Passano '98, Heather Melanson '97 and Nicole Troy '98.
St. Mary's College scored a low of 136 in the three day competition to take the national championship. They led the competition after two days with only 72 points.
On Saturday, Navy followed St. Mary's with 84 points, while Princeton had a low 100.
Being only two points out of third place, Dartmouth was inspired to make a strong showing on Sunday afternoon.
Despite winning by 23 points, the competition for St. Mary's was tougher than the results indicate. At one point Army led and with only two races left two points separated the teams.
Led by 1994 Rolex Yachtswomen of the year Danielle Brennan, St. Mary's pulled ahead though. The Big Green placed only two points back from Army with a score of 161.
The Big Green now will travel north to Long Beach where the Varsity A and B teams will compete this weekend in the National varsity competition.
