Softball team swept in twin-bill

The Dartmouth softball team could not pull out a victory against the University of Vermont yesterday afternoon in their doubleheader.

Dartmouth lost the first game 6-0, and fell again in the second, 3-1. Its record is now 8-26 overall.

In the first game, Ericka Lee '95 took to the mound and then Elise Leroux'95 finished off the game.

The third inning proved to be the tough one. Lee was pitching well going into the third, and after the leadoff hitter grounded out, there was a walk, a single, then a three-run homer to put UVM up 3-0.

Jennifer Pitts '95 had a single in the fourth, and Kim Worboys '95 and Lauren McQuade '97 both had singles in the sixth but Dartmouth could not bring the runners home.

Coach Hank Tenney said, "Our best chance came in the sixth, with two on and one out, but we couldn't get the hits we needed."

In the second game, Pitts led off with a triple and McQuade drove her in with a single. Christina Maybaum '98 had a no-hitter until the fourth inning, when an error was committed at home plate, bringing in the first Vermont run.

Dartmouth started the sixth inning with a walk and a single by Pitts. With a runner on first and second and no outs, the Big Green attempted a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. It was a hit to the third baseman and she threw to third for the out.

"Christina played a great game," Tenney said. "She didn't walk anyone in the second game. Overall, we hit the ball well, the controversial call really cost us in the fourth inning."

"It was great to be able to compete with such a good ball club like UVM," said left-fielder Susan Warhover '95.
