Pelton, after requests, joins school board race

Dean of the College Lee Pelton recently announced his intention to run as a write-in candidate for the Hanover School Board.

Pelton, who told the Valley News people have been asking him to run for the school board for several years, said he is running for the position because he feels a sense of civic duty to the community.

Pelton's daughter currently attends the Bernice A. Ray Elementary School in Hanover, and his son will enter the school in three years.

Pelton said he thinks his experience as a dean and in higher education in general will be beneficial to the school board.

"I think I could probably bring to the board many years of experience in education even though it is not at that level," Pelton said. "I think that I am a pretty good listener and a quick learner."

Pelton said he does not have a formal agenda and is not running on a single issue.

"I don't have an agenda other than I want to be in a position to make sure the Hanover school system is the best that it can be with its resources,"he said.

According to an article written in the Valley News, there are two other write-in candidates and one filed candidate running for two seats on the Hanover School Board.

Lee Ashmun, a retired physician, decided to enter the election after learning that The Flirtations, an openly-homosexual a cappella group performed at the Ray school, according to the Valley News.

The school board should "never, ever, ever have permitted this thing to happen," Ashmun told the Valley News.

Judy McKeown and Becky Torrey are also running for positions on the Board.

McKeown, a buyer for the Dartmouth Bookstore, wants to ensure the district's expenditures are spent wisely, the Valley News reported.

Torrey, a former elementary school teacher and vice president of the board of the Hampshire Cooperative Nursery School, advocates improving the quality of academic instruction in Hanover schools.

The election will take place on Tuesday, March 14.
