'Act upon threat to the role of education'

To the Editor:

We write in response to the student rally held on Feb. 19, 1995 in protest of the proposed cuts in educational funding by Congress. As members of the Interracial Concerns Committee, we request your consideration of the following:

  • The fundamental importance of education to the future of the individual, of the family, of the community, of the nation, of the world.

  • Approximately 50 percent of Dartmouth students who are recipients of financial aid;

  • All students -- those receiving and those not receiving financial aid;

  • The value of diverse student populations at every institution of higher learning;

  • The importance of any and all investment in youth, recognizing the vital role that we play in the future;

  • Equal access to opportunity;

  • The responsibility of the government to continue to support education as a human right throughout a lifetime of an individual;

We implore that all members of the Dartmouth community act upon this threat to the role of education in their lives. We ask that you phone and write representatives in addition to continuing to discuss this issue in a public domain.

We also implore that the U.S. government recognize the importance of higher education, and thus prevent the passage of proposed cuts in spending for education.
