Celebrated poet Strand to read

Mark Strand, a highly acclaimed poet whose work has been characterized as both dark and luminous but always powerful, will read today at 4 p.m. in 1 Rockefeller.

Strand is the first scheduled poet in the creative writing program's 12th annual Poetry and Prose series, which will also feature the unusually strong line-up of Louise Gluck, Sharon Bryan and Derek Walcott.

Strand achieved national notoriety when he was appointed Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress is 1990. He has published eight books of poetry, as well as prose, translations, children's fiction and art books.

His latest book, "Dark Harbor," (1993) is one long poem dealing with themes of departure, journey and arrival at safe harbor.
