Tree City, U.S.A.

The National Arbor Day Foundation named the town of Hanover a "Tree City USA" for its efforts in maintaining and planting trees.

The award recognizes efforts in communities around the nation. This is the 15th time Hanover has received the award.

"We are pleased to be recognized," Town Manager Cliff Vermilya said. "We plant about 20 to 25 trees a year. A great deal of credit should go to Bill Desh and the crew."

The foundation, a national organization based in Nebraska, encourages tree care and planting programs.

A ceremony will take place today at 2 p.m. when Mary Reynolds, director of the Urban Forestry Center, presents a flag with the organization's logo and a walnut mounted plaque to the town at the Bernice A. Ray Elementary School.

Vermilya said the white flag will fly outside of the town hall.

"Trees have long been recognized for the beauty and value they lend to our homes, neighborhood, parks and business areas. At the same time, trees cool our cities, fight pollution, conserve energy and give wildlife a home," the National Arbor Day Foundation's Executive Director John Rosenow said in a press release.
