Two women were trapped in an elevator in Silsby Hall for 30 minutes yesterday before being rescued by the Hanover Fire Department.
An electrical malfunction in the elevator's motor caused the elevator to shut down automatically at 6 p.m. yesterday, leaving the two women stuck on the third floor, Hanover Fire Captain Michael Doolan said.
There was no fire, but "a light smoke" emanated from the motor in the basement, Doolan said.
The fire fighters were on the way to Silsby when they learned of the smoke, causing Doolan to sound a first alarm at 6:03, calling more firefighters to the scene.
Fire fighters forced open the fourth floor elevator doors, lowered a ladder, and helped the women climb out through the elevator's ceiling, Doolan said.
Nobody was injured and damage was limited to the elevator's motor, College Spokesman Alex Huppe said. Neither the fire department nor Safety and Security would release the names of the women, but both said they were not Dartmouth students.
