Overspending charged

Justin Heather '96 filed a complaint with Director of Student Activities Tim Moore, alleging that Danielle Moore '95 and Rukmini Sichitiu '95 overspent during the just-completed Student Assembly campaign.

On Tuesday, Danielle Moore won the race for Assembly president and Sichitiu won the vice presidential election. Campaign regulations stipulate that candidates for Assembly president and vice president can spend up to $150 on campaign materials.

Both Danielle Moore and Sichitiu denied that they overspent on their campaigns and said they provided breakdowns of their spending to Tim Moore yesterday. Danielle Moore said she spent $147.50 and Sichitiu said she spent $142.60.

Heather said several "random" students brought the possible violation to his attention, but he would not get into specific details about the allegation until he files a formal complaint today.

Tim Moore said, "There has been an allegation made, and as is our normal course of action, we will review the matter."

"I'm a little disturbed after seeing such positive campaigning that this would have to come at the very end, but I can't say it's unexpected," Danielle Moore said.

If the complaint has merit, the matter will be referred to the Election Advisory Committee, a group of student leaders and administrators who oversee student elections, he said.

Tim Moore would not comment on the contents of the allegation, or the possible punishments for elected students who do overspend.

Both Danielle Moore and Sichitiu said they simply found ways to keep costs down during the campaign.

"We really researched various places and we also didn't make as many batches of the other posters," Sichitiu said. "We just did our homework beforehand."

For example, Sichitiu said she had 1,000 copies of a flier made at Budget Print in Lebanon for about $82. According to her campaign manager, Michael Corriere '94, printing a similar flier in Hanover would cost more than $150.

No one answered telephone calls to Budget Print last night.

Last year, Assembly president-elect Stewart Shirasu '94 resigned after a slew of controversy, including allegations that he overspent on his campaign. That allegation was filed by Corriere.

Corriere said that he expected a possible allegation because it looked like they did so much, but added that he would be the last person to overspend, refering to his own allegations against Shirasu last year.
