Others Disqualified for Military Service

To the Editor:

Lest we forget, Dartmouth is an educational institution. Its purpose is to provide an education, and ROTC is one way someone might be able to afford that education. It is for this simple reason that it is absurd to use Dartmouth as a soap box to decry any political issue, whether it be the actions of the Oregon State Legislature, the U.S. Military, etc.

Dartmouth should, in its actions, reflect its educational mission. If this means offering programs that might attract would-be students, then so shall it be.

The political issue of ROTC is sensitive, but as I've yet to see an amendment to the Bill of Rights declaring being able to serve in the military a right, I refer those angry with the ROTC situation to those members of our population who have been denied the opportunity to serve based on medical and physical criteria. Life's tough.
