Lyczak '67, UNH prof, killed

Richard Lyczak '67, a computer science professor at the University of New Hampshire, died Saturday at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, 10 days after being shot in Portsmouth.

Lyczak, who was 48, was a Fullbright scholar who spent last winter teaching in Thailand. He arrived at UNH ten years ago to start the school's computer literacy program.

Lyczak was driving in Portsmouth when his car was rammed from behind. The other car's driver then shot Lyczak before driving away, the UNH News Bureau said. His wife and 22-year-old son were in the car at the time but neither were injured.

Lyzack had been unconscious in the hospital's intensive care unit with a bullet lodged in his brain since the shooting.

An 18-year-old Portsmouth man, who apparently had no motive or connection to Lyczak or his family, was charged with first-degree murder just hours after Lyczak's death on Saturday.

Born in Portsmouth, Lyczak received bachelor's and doctoral degrees in Psychology from the College in 1967 and 1972. He earned a master's degree in computer science from UNH in 1990.

Just months ago, Lyczak received a $350,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to teach high school teachers how to integrate computers into their curriculum.

Lyczak was a musician and outdoorsman, active in his church and community, the UNH News Bureau said. He is survived by his wife and three college-age children.
