'97 arrested for assault

Hanover Police yesterday arrested Shakeeb Alireza '97 for allegedly assaulting his roommate during a fight early Sunday morning in Topliff Hall.

Officer Patrick O'Neil said Alireza was handcuffed outside of Silsby Hall just after 11 a.m. He was charged with simple assault and criminal threatening.

Both charges are Class A misdemeanors and could carry jail sentences.

O'Neil said Alireza's roommate, Michael Chong '97, suffered "bruising to the neck area" during the fight, which began as a verbal argument at about 4:30 a.m. Sunday.

Neighbors on the fourth floor of Topliff said the freshmen did not get along. The neighbors described a sharp difference in personalities and said Alireza and Chong had argued before.

One resident said Chong was angry because Alireza had hosted a party in their room on Saturday night. The resident said the early morning shouting match turned violent when Chong jumped on Alireza and Alireza pushed him away and hit him with a chair.

Police and Safety and Security officers arrived on the scene at about 5:30 a.m.

Alireza was taken to Dick's House because of intoxication. Kathryn Clark, a College spokeswoman, said alcohol was one factor leading to the fight.

Alireza was released on $1500 bail and will be arraigned in Hanover District Court Nov. 9. He could not be reached for comment.

Chong also could also not be reached.
