Carnival arrives for summer

Before memories of Tubestock begin to fade, this weekend's Summer Carnival promises to deliver some fun and entertainment to break up the monotony of the long, humid summer days.

Aside from the activities and parties that always seem to center around the fraternities on any big weekend, the Programming Board has organized a series of events that begin today. Although Summer Carnival has no deep intrinsic meaning like some of the other traditions, Director Linda Kennedy explained that the weekend "is meant to be fun."

The weekend festivities kick off in front of the Gold Coast today at 5 p.m. with a comedy show featuring Jimmy Smith and Paul Elwell. The student band Sponge will open for the comedians and Moe's will serve free subs to the audience. In case of rain, the show, which is sponsored by the Collis Governing Board and the Class of 1995 Council, will move to Webster Hall.

However, the real carnival festivities occur Saturday on the Green. The Regulars and Sponge, two student bands, will jam throughout the afternoon and then Jose Perez '95 and his friends will perform Disney songs.

In addition, the Programming Board will truck in 30 tons of sand for a castle building contest. Students can either help to create the big sculpture, much like they do in Winter Carnival, or can make their own personal sand creations. Shovels and buckets will be provided.

Also on the Green, organizations will sponsor a variety of booths. There will be a contest for the best booth, and students will compete for the prize of 24 lobsters. Sigma Delta sorority's massage booth won last year.

Following the tradition of the last few years, a pig will be roasted on the green and be ready to eat at around 3 p.m. The Co-ed Fraternity Sorority Council has also planned a block party for late Saturday afternoon on Webster Avenue.

In the case of rain, Saturday's action will be postponed until Sunday.
